Guiding Principles

 

As a condition of participation in MSU HEP program, participants are expected to abide by the guiding principles:

  • I will take responsibility for my actions.
  • I will not blame others.
  • I am responsible for myself.
  • I will avoid negative and destructive external factors, distractions, and excuses that influence my decisions.
  • There is always room for improvement.
  • I will counteract negative consequences.
  • I will be concerned about myself.
  • I will NOT beat myself up for past "failures".
  • I will push myself to do the best that I possibly can.
  • MSU HEP is a safe haven of respect and thoughtfulness.
  • I will EARN my GED versus GETTING my GED.
  • I will block out society's negative voice.
  • I understand that MSU HEP "Believes in ME"
  • Nothing in life is for free.
  • I understand that nobody owes me anything in life.
  • I will dare to dream.
  • I have self-determination.
  • I am dedicated.

Classroom Expectations

As a condition of participation in the MSU HEP program, participants are expected to abide by the following classroom expectations:

Classroom DOs:

  • Ask questions
  • Write down homework
  • Be at least 5 minutes early
  • Be honest
  • Be prepared with:
    • Correct books
    • Pen
    • Pencil
    • Completed homework
    • Questions
  • Have an "I can do it" attitude
  • Have respect and appreciation of:
    • Themselves
    • Teachers
    • Classmates
    • Staff
    • University property
    • Others property
  • Be supportive of one another
  • Be a positive role model
  • Check attitude at the door
  • Sit in front of class with group
  • Raise hands for questions, responses, and input
  • Contact/notify instructor in event of absence, tardy, etc

Classroom DON'T:

  • Bring in cell phones or pagers
  • Swear
  • Disrupt the classroom with inappropriate behavior
  • Interrupt teacher or classmates
  • Ask to use the restroom in the middle of class
  • Argue with classmates or teachers
  • Laugh or criticize yourself or classmates
  • Be afraid to make mistakes
  • Give excuses
  • Worry about anybody else except yourself
  • Pack up and leave early from class
